In the United States, withholding by employers of tax on wages is required by the federal, most state, and some local governments. Taxes withheld include federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare taxes, state income tax, and other taxes by a few states.

If you live and work in the United States, your employer must withhold taxes from your paycheck. The required Federal and State taxes to be withheld are, Federal income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and State income tax.
How to Calculate Federal Tax Withholdings Amounts
Employers: If you are an employer you must withhold Federal and State taxes from your employees paychecks. To simplify the task of calculating withholding taxes, you can use the payroll tax calculator by Intuit. They offer a 30 day free trial.
Employees: Income tax amount withheld on wages is based on the amount of wages less an amount for declared withholding allowances (often called exemptions). Amounts of tax withheld are determined by the tax withholding tables. You can use the free W-4 calculator by TurboTax to determine how much tax you should have withheld from your paycheck.
Tax rates and withholding tables apply separately at the federal, most state, and some local levels. The amount to be withheld is based on both the amount wages paid on any paycheck and the period covered by the paycheck. Federal and some state withholding amounts are at graduated rates, so higher wages have higher withholding percentages.
Withheld income taxes are treated by employees as a payment on account of tax due for the year, which is determined on the annual income tax return filed after the end of the year (federal Form 1040 series, and appropriate state forms). Withholdings in excess of tax so determined are refunded.

Please people stop blaming each other for the nefarious actions of our "elected" leaders. The politicians from BOTH sides of the aisle rely on right AND left wing talk radio MSNBC,Fox,CNN,etc. to do their dirty work for them. I get a big laugh, when I hear one of our politicians all upset about a bill that is going to take a few bucks out of their pocket. They only own two or three houses, big boats, a ton of land, the works. They mess up, and they pay some big time lying lawyer, or a judge that has been bought off, or under the good ole boy system, a little scratch my back, and I'll scratch your money, and it's ok. I just got screwed by two attorneys, 4-judges, and a lying school teacher who makes $56,000.00 +, and has a side line job on the internet, and does not pay taxes on her tutoring jobs, and together with her attorney dumped all the taxes on me to pay while she enjoyed spending our tax money each year, and then lied to the i.r.s., and said she knew nothing of our taxes and was granted spousal dissmal from what she rightfully owes to the i.r.s..We make it together, spend it together, then we should pay together. I should rent a sign in Chapin were she is a school teacher, and tell them what a lier, and thief, and crook she really is, and how she steals. This is the way our public servants get away with this tax stuff. Why don't the i.r.s. check on this kind of crap people pull in the lower sector of people. She has lied and walked away from her duties, and managed to dump them on her husband of eleven years, with a divorce, after running him out of their marriage. I am retired military, i get paid taxes which is taxable
taxes were only to be paid for our first war, are we still fighting it. social security is suspose to be free from taxes,when me and my wife files at the end of year because of my mil. retirement they still and in our social security for tax purposes I think our no taxation without representation went out the door a long time ago. People cannot blame one president for all our troubles we did it ourselves by electing these idiots to run our country.they promise us everything we need and when they get elected they do nothing. So sad to see so many people that spend their lives thinking that the government is so evil. We've got businesses making record profits not hiring people, we've got Wall Street bank to their usual salaries in the billions, but there are people on here worried about whether politicians who run our country and the defense and infrastructure are paying themselves $130,000 or $140,000 a year. We need taxes to go back up to where they were in the 1990s and most of this ship will right itself, but without that, I fear we will lose to China or other countries that understand that there is a social cost to being a country. So sad what the US has become, the Bush years really did us in. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid have done much in a mere two years to try to reverse the damage, but the country is too ignorant to understand. I feel so sad.

We need to get an additional amendment that forces ALL Americans ( Including the president and the politicians) to be subject to the laws passed ( like Health care). Politicians should not be able to vote on their own salaries. How about the politicians pay for their own car, pay for their overseas trips (Example: The president's family trip to Hawaii), and have their pensions based on time served, while paying into and participating in the Social Security System?? Obama promised us change, how including these changes???

I think the issue was that the earned income credit this past year did not apply to anyone under 25. This affected my young adult son also. I would argue that the earned income credit shouldn't exist for anyone - why give refunds to people in excess of what they paid in?
The tax rates for a kid making $18,000 didn't change, in fact he should owe less on the same money so she's not comparing apples to apples. She's thrown an orange in. He probably didn't withhold the same amount. They gave a stimulus of $400 during the year through withholding and maybe she claims him so he doesn't qualify for the credit on his return and didn't adjust accordingly or said he was exempt. Nobody making $18K is worse off tax wise. $180,000 maybe. I know some people were messed up by the stimulus like kids who have parents claiming their exemption and people with several part time jobs. The withholding was adjusted and most people didn't ponder if if would work out when they filed. I hate when they mess with withholding, they've done it many times over the years as a "stimulus" but the extra $4 a week or whatever doesn't make a big difference and students and people with multiple jobs end up short when they do their taxes.
Congress passes them but they have to be signed by the President.

The President of the United States do not pass laws. I think a number of you have forgotton U.S. History. Please go back and re-read U.S. History. the congress and Senate pass laws laws not the President. I am SO MAD... my son only made 18K this year and has to pay the IRS.........big bucks....I do this taxes every year and last year making the same money = he owes 250.00 this year he owes 650.00 making the same money. What is wrong with our government .... how can they do this to these low income earners? Obama YOU lied to us....... I have been doing his taxes for a number of years and this has never happened where he owes this much money until Obama became our President. I am mad!!!
Wow, it is interesting that "some body with brains" doesn't know that schools are not paid for by the federal government, but by state and local taxes. State and local taxes are the primary source of income not only for public schools, universities, and community colleges, but for most libraries, parks (except for national parks which you likely use only if on a vacation), roads (just not federal highways), police, fire fighters, teachers, trash pickup, etc. In other words, MOST of what we "need" is NOT provided by the federal government, even though it collects the vast majority of the taxes. Those taxes go primarily to fund national defense, entitlements which are a mandatory re-distribution of your taxes to those whom politicians need to mollify in order to be re-elected, and financing of our huge national debt (about 8% of the federal budget goes just for that, and it's going to rapidly climb higher with increased spending). Do the math, "some body with brains", the federal government CANNOT keep spending like this on "necessary government programs" as you call of them, because frankly most federal programs AREN'T necessary and there simply is not enough money to pay for all of them.

I am so sick of Taxes, and the law makers that make them. I went shopping the other day because, I needed some personal things for my self and cleaning supplies for the house. When I got finished, I spent $86.00 on what. On things that I need. I am so sick of our law makers, that they all need to go some were and leave the real hard working Man and Women alone. The only thing they care about is there self Worth.
