Do You Qualify For The Earned Income Tax Credit?

If you are a low income working family or individual, you may qualify for the earned income credit, even if you don't make enough money to pay taxes.

The government may reduce your tax obligation or even pay you money if you qualify for the Earned Income Credit. If you made less than a certain amount of money in a given year, you can claim the earned income tax credit.

If you have children you may qualify for even more. Even if you don't make enough to file a tax return, you may still qualify for the earned income tax credit and get a refund.

You may qualify for up to $5,666

  • If you are single and earned less than $13,400
  • Single with one child and earned less than $35,450 single with 2 or more children and earned less than $40,250
  • Married and earned less than $18,400 married with one child and earned less than $40,450 married with 2 or more children and earned less than $45,250

Earned Income Credit Qualifications

To qualify and claim the earned income credit you will need a social security number. If you are married you must file jointly. If you have children, they need to qualify as well. The children need to be under 19 years old or if they are students, under 24. Children with permanent disability may be any age. Foster children and children that you have been financially responsible for may also qualify. The earned income credit is designed to help you financially. I think you should check this out, don't you?

You can use the free tax calculator provided by TurboTax Online to estimate your earned income credit amount.

If you are receiving unemployment and havent had any taxes withheld then you wont get a refund at all whether you have kids or not because you dont have any earned income. Unemployment is not considered EARNED and you could have gotten back just a refund of whatever taxes were taken out if you would have allowed taxes to be taken from your unemployment checks but you havent put anything in so you dont get anything out. Hope this helps.

This system is turning out to be a very good way to make more money online and till now many people have been benefiting from it. After signing up, it takes 2-3 days to be accepted by Google. They will send a message if your website is not selected. Website content is the main criterion for getting approved. So in that case change the website content. Try to put your unique and interesting content; it's for sure that your site will be accepted.

My husband has a job and has earned income and I am on unemployment. When taxact figured my earn income credit it used my adjusted gross income which has my unemployment in it. But I have heard that unemployment does not count. So if that is the case then why did it still count towards our total?

Jen,

You are correct. As of Jan 1st 2011, the EIC tax rebate will no longer appear on your Paycheck. Employers have been notified and the only way to receive the EIC is through your taxes at year end in 2011. Honestly, they have found out that a lot of individuals have claimed this Paycheck deduction that do not qualify for it.

Thus, they have determined that it is far better to phase this form out. I am not sure weather they are trying to phase out the EIC completely. Time will tell!

I have had money added back to each paycheck using a special form for the EIC. My employer is now telling me that it is no longer available to do it this way is this true?

Tosha 17 months ago

If you are collecting unemployment and not working you do not qualify for an EIC. It is an earned income credit. Unemployment is not earned income bottomeline. The good thing is it isn't include in the total so if you did earn some wages then you Unemployment won't put you over the phase out
